Nowadays, food can be transported across regions thanks to advanced logistic delivery. People have more choices when purchasing food, but this has resulted in a number of problems. Overall, I believe that the drawbacks of a global food market outweigh its benefits.
Some people claim that the globalised food trade has many advantages. Firstly, it grants customers abundant options for daily meals since they are able to get access to exotic flavours without travelling far, which further facilities keeping a balanced diet for the public. For example, when local vegetable and fruit harvests are reduced in certain seasons, imported food can fill the supply gap. Secondly, the worldwide trend of transporting food promotes the boom of logistics and creates a large number of job positions, which leads to a shortage of labour forces including chauffeurs, pilots and transit workers.
Nevertheless, this trend of food trade is likely to cause environmental and economic problems. To be specific, means of transportation such as cargo planes and ships that are commonly used in the long-distance transport of food would consume a significant amount of fuel, and the excessive exhaust released by such vehicles would pollute the environment. Furthermore, the proper preservation of food necessitates fresh-keeping techniques like refrigeration, which would cost extra energy. Therefore, global food trade apparently raises carbon emissions and aggravates environmental problems. In addition, imported food may harm local food markets. Large international food corporations can drive prices down to occupy the market with their industrial chains and strong capital, so that individual farmers would be unable to keep their market share due to a lack of competition. As a result, some of them may suffer a loss and even go bankrupt. Once the local food industry fails, the residents in that area will have to rely on imported food, which means that their food security will be jeopardised if the food supplier raises prices or has difficulty maintaining stable supplies.
To conclude, despite the convenience the global food trade may bring, serious environmental issues and damage to local farming as well as the food security problem cannot be ignored. Therefore, people should be encouraged to consume more locally-produced food rather than imported food.
