It seems a common practice that CEOs of a corporation earn a considerably higher salary than other employees. While they deserve above-average pay, I think too large of a chasm would negatively affect the firm performance.
The principal reason for the compensation gap is that median employees are no substitute for the executive. With years of experience or impeccable qualifications in specific fields, these talented managers possess the expertise that most other workers lack. The higher income acts as an incentive to keep them working hard. Besides, the CEOs actually have to assume more responsibilities to ensure business success. They need to be well-informed and cautious to make sensible decisions and proper judgments to avoid failure. With such immense pressure that few workers need to bear, their high salary only makes sense.
On the other hand, just because executives contribute to corporations does not mean their pay can be unlimitedly high. It is believed that the pay gap is an indicator of whether a company is sharing wealth internally. Once workers realize this, the expanding gap would be seen as a form of labour deprivation and negatively affect employees’ morale, dedication, and creativity, thereby lowering their productivity. In some cases, the aggravated boss-employee relationship may even trigger demonstrations and strikes, which is not rare in many places. In other words, in order for the long-term growth of a corporation, a balance between the compensation of different parties is essential.
In conclusion, I believe that while higher pay for executives than employees is necessary to encourage them to work hard to improve corporate performance, the compensation should be at the right level to avoid too large a pay gap.
